Custom Orthotics/Orthoses/Splints

Custom Splints/Orthoses

Custom orthosis interventions are a critical component of our Certified Hand Therapy Specialty team. We fabricate most devices in house by our highly trained hand therapists, and may be made from a variety of materials, most often thermoplastic or conformable polyester cast material. Each splint is made and molded to custom fit each patient to suit their specific needs.

Splints are used to provide rest or support for a painful or compromised joint, protect healing structures after injury or surgical intervention, increase stability to improve functional ease and independence, assist with the restoration of lost movement and/or function, or regain pain-free range of motion in stiff joints or tissues.

Some common conditions requiring custom splinting include:

  • Fractures

  • Lacerations to tendon, ligaments

  • Post surgical care

  • Tendinitis

  • Arthritis

  • Peripheral nerve injury

  • Burns

Custom Orthotics

Orthotics are inserts for your shoes used to support, adjust and align the lower extremities and spine in a biomechanical manner. By giving your feet the appropriate support your joints in the ankles, knees, hips, and lumbar spine are able to move more efficiently reducing pain and improving overall mobility.

Many patients will benefit from over the counter orthotics, however for those who need additional and more effective support, a set of custom orthotics is recommended. Our therapists are able to take a mold of each patient’s foot to allow for full support of the arch that is unique to each individual. Orthotics can also be customized to adjust for leg length discrepancies or be specified to certain sports footwear.

Conditions that may be treated by custom orthotics:

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Shin splints

  • IT band syndrome

  • Flattening of feet

  • Joint pain associated with the low back, hips, knees, and ankles
